Just like humans our pets are prone to skin cancer through exposure from the sun.
Most at risk cats and dogs are those that are of a lighter colouring e.g. white hair and pink skin. White cats that especially like to sunbake or sit in windows may be prone to developing skin cancer on their nose and ear tips. The cancer is known as squamous cell carcinoma and is a locally invasive – if caught early may be excised and/or frozen with liquid nitrogen after being assessed at a vet clinic.
Prevention is better than cure and fortunately there is a suncream available from vet clinics. This summer before sending your fair coloured pet out to play make sure they have ‘slipped slopped slapped’ (are protected) before going out to play in the sun.
